#VulDieGat: Benoni branch tackles enormous pothole caused by municipality

AfriForum’s Benoni branch is on a mission this month to, like other AfriForum branches nationwide, repair enormous potholes in order to stop the deterioration of important road infrastructure. The branch recently used 74 bags of tar, totalling 1,8 tonnes of tar, to repair two large potholes – one of which was caused by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality – in the Benoni area.

A giant pothole that spans the width of 10th Avenue in Northmead was repaired with tar on 6 July after the branch had to do temporary repairs to it just so the public could use the road. The municipality dug up the road in May to repair infrastructure, but never resurfaced the road. After several fruitless requests to the municipality to repair the damage, the branch, at the request of the community, decided to repair the road itself. This road has now been fully restored.

The branch also repaired a dangerous pothole in Oak Street, which is a very busy road in the area. This pothole forced motorists to drive on the other side of the road just to prevent damage to their vehicles. This pothole has now, to the great relief of the residents, also been repaired.

“Projects like this are proof that doing it yourself can make a positive difference in a community, which is why AfriForum is proud of the dedication and cooperation of all its Benoni members.

This branch not only tackles the immediate challenges of the community, but also strives to have a long-term impact on the wider community,” says Jurie Ferreira, AfriForum’s District Coordinator of the East Rand.

AfriForum annually tackles a national pothole project in July. This year, the civil rights organisation wants to repair R1 million worth of potholes across the country. So far, the AfriForum branches in the northern region, which includes the East Rand, have repaired potholes worth R189 270, for which a total of 2 103 bags of tar, that is 52,575 tonnes of tar, were used.
