Vryheid landfill site does poorly in audit

An audit by AfriForum’s Vryburg branch has found the local municipality’s landfill site to be in an appalling condition. This audit forms part of AfriForum’s annual landfill site audit, aimed at monitoring government’s service delivery.

“According to Article 9(1) of the National Environmental Management Act, Vryheid’s landfill site doesn’t meet the necessary requirements. The site’s audit result has declined from 40% to a dismal 5% in the last 5 years. It is clear that the local government has lost control of the site and that it has failed the Vryheid community,” says Andre van der Walt, chairman of AfriForum’s Vryheid branch.

“AfriForum does annual landfill site audits which is necessitated by the state’s neglect to fulfil this important function and to release the results. AfriForum was also unable to locate the necessary licence documents for Vryheid on the website of the Department of Environmental Affairs as required,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s district coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.

The community is very dismayed about a foul cloud of smoke that frequently spreads over the town – caused by fires at the landfill. “AfriForum has involved the Department of Environmental Affairs and it is considering drastic steps against Abaqulusi,” adds van der Walt.
