Six drug dealers arrested thanks to assistance of AfriForum’s West Moot neighbourhood watch

AfriForum’s West Moot neighbourhood watch on 25 August 2018 made six drug-related arrests during a patrol in cooperation with the SAPS and other safety institutions in the Hercules area. The neighbourhood watch covered approximately 300 km during this patrol.

Two of the suspects that were arrested are allegedly active drug dealers in the area and had heroin, cocaine and cannabis (presumably for distribution purposes) in their possession. The SAPS was present during all the arrests.

According to Tiaan Oosthuizen, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Gauteng North, the arrests were made in two of the largest problem areas with regard to drug smuggling, namely underneath the Hendrik Street bridge and at the Mountain View train station.

“Drug dealers active in these areas must take note of the arrests and be under no illusion that we are on their trail.”

“Cooperation and support – among others between the community, neighbourhood watch and the police – play a key role in the combating of crime. I would hereby in particular like to thank the SAPS’s Hercules branch for their active presence and hard work to safeguard the community,” says Johan Liebenberg, Chairperson of AfriForum’s West Moot neighbourhood watch.

“Community members taking responsibility themselves for their own safety within the framework of the law is the key to combating crime,” says Oosthuizen.

AfriForum is making a plea to communities in the Tshwane Metro to become involved at their local AfriForum branches and actively participate in the activities of the neighbourhood watches. For more information on this, send an email to tiaan.oosthuizen@afriforum.co.za.
