Senzo Meyiwa: Case postponed until 22 April

AfriForum welcomes Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela’s comments today that this is the last time that he will consider applications for postponements in the case against the five accused persons who are being accused of, amongst others, the murder of Senzo Meyiwa the former Bafana-Bafana captain. The judge also said that, although the accused persons have certain constitutional rights, they are not the only group of people with rights – the family of the deceased, as well as the community also have the right to know what happened to Meyiwa.

AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit has a watching brief on behalf of Ntombifuthi Meyiwa, as well as Zama and Nomalanga Meyiwa (respectively the mother and sisters of Senzo) in this case.

Judge Maumela postponed the case against Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and SifikuhleNkani Ntuli Sifiso upon the application of accused 5’s legal counsel to 22 April 2022. This follows after Adv. Zandile Mshololo argued that she needs further particulars from the State and must consult with witnesses for the defence to adequately prepare for trial.

The trial was placed on the roll to start yesterday, but was also postponed on this occasion to provide accused 5 with the opportunity to consult with his legal counsel because the State, according to Adv. Mshololo, only provided certain crucial witness statements to the defence on 30 March. After consultation with her client yesterday, she today argued that accused 5’s defence case has not been adequately prepared due to the State providing the statements at such a late stage, and that she needs more time.
