Private Prosecution Unit will assist NPA and police with further investigations into Senzo case

The five accused in the 2014 murder on the former Bafana-Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa, appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court for the second time today. The case was postponed until 5 March 2020 for further investigation. AfriForum represents the Meyiwa family in this case and indicated today that the Private Prosecution Unit intends to liaise with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and work together with the police in the investigation and prosecution of the relevant individuals.

“We intend on liaising with Adv. George Baloyi, the prosecutor in the case, and continue working with the investigating officers of the SAPS to, amongst others, communicate the concerns of the Meyiwa family to them, as well as share our views on the investigation. We are of the opinion that this will help the state in their prosecution case against the relevant persons,” says Adv. Gerrie Nel, Head of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit.

The following accused persons appeared in court today: Muzikawulahlelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokosizi Maphisa and SifikuhleNkani Ntuli Sifiso.

“We are however still of the opinion that the mastermind behind the conspiracy has not been arrested yet and we will therefore continue to assist the police and the NPA in their investigation until justice prevails for the Meyiwa family. We are grateful that the SAPS was willing to involve Adv. Nel and AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit in the investigation over the last few months and the Unit will continue to monitor the case in the interest of justice,” says Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum.

Sifiso stated on behalf of the Meyiwa family that they are proud to be associated with AfriForum and that they are happy that the organisation has taken the necessary steps to finally bring about progress in the matter. “We are still hopeful that more arrests will follow so that the mastermind behind the murder will also be held accountable. The family is confident that the involvement of AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit will ensure that justice prevails. ”
