Noord van die berg branch steps in after Tshwane Metro’s plea over stormwater drains
AfriForum’s Noord van die berg neighbourhood team worked tirelessly during November to clean eight stormwater drains in parts of Pretoria North following fears about the impact that the blocked drains have on roads when it rains. The Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality recently appealed to residents not to dump household waste into stormwater drains, as illegal dumping clogs stormwater drains and causes roads to flood when it rains.
The AfriForum neighbourhood team worked tirelessly to ensure that the blockages in stormwater drains were removed as soon as possible. The neighbourhood team particularly focused its attention on the stormwater drains in Rachel de Beer and Grafenheim Street, as well as parts of Daan de Wet Nel Drive. The Metro’s teams also helped AfriForum in places with the clean-up work.
In addition to cleaning stormwater drains, the neighbourhood team also:
- filled 1 570 bags with rubbish;
- removed 196 loads of rubbish;
- cut 2,5 hectares of grass;
- traveled 1 031 km to get all the work done;
- cleaned 12 parks and cut the grass; and
- cleared eight areas littered with debris.
“The Noord van die berg branch has once again proven that it plays an important and relevant role in the community. The area is fortunate to have this team of volunteers looking after their well-being. AfriForum is also grateful to the Metro’s teams in the north, who worked wonderfully with AfriForum’s team,” says Llewellynn Hemmens, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria North.
