Mooi River neighbourhood watches participate in national patrol
AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches in the Mooi River on 14 April carried out a mass patrol in cooperation with the South African Police Service (SAPS), the local community policing forum (CPF), community members, security companies and security agencies. The patrol started around 18:00 and continued until 03:00 the next morning.
The patrol was carried out to increase policing visibility. A total of 7 065 km was covered and 261 patrollers with 212 vehicles participated. Around 140 people from security agencies, such as the SAPS, GPF and security companies, participated.
The neighbourhood watches that participated include Bothaville, Deneysville, Parys, Sasolburg, Songloed, the Hartbeesfontein neighbourhood and farm watches, Potchefstroom, Stilfontein, Orkney, Ventersdorp and Wolmaransstad.
No serious incidents were reported. Incidents ranged from suspicious vehicles, drunk drivers, public drunkenness, cable theft, domestic disturbance, vehicle accidents and small fires. Arrested suspects were handed over to the local police.
The two neighbourhood watches in Hartbeesfontein and the SAPS held a roadblock and approximately R95 500 in fines were issued.
“AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches will constantly conduct mass patrols to curb crime in cooperation with the SAPS and other security agencies. Communities and organisations must work together to fight crime. Increased visibility in the neighbourhoods and cities plays an important role in community safety,” says Joseph Renaud, AfriForum’s Safety Specialist for the central region.
“I am very proud of these neighbourhood watches who are always willing to participate in the national patrol. I thank every patroller who willingly gives their time every night to look after the safety of their respective communities,” says Alta Pretorius, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Mooi River.
