Joint initiative promotes cultural identity of the AmaBhele KaJamangile
AfriForum and the Office of iNkosi Zwelothando Mabandla collaborated to promote the cultural identity of the AmaBhele KaJamangile Traditional Community by erecting welcome and direction road signs in the community’s area between Tsolo and Maclear (Nqanqarhu) in the Eastern Cape. Welcome boards with the isiXhosa words Isizwe SamaBhele KaJamangile siyakwamkela that means “the AmaBhele KaJamangile nation welcomes you” was erected close to the borders of the kingdom whilst direction boards that indicates the road to the royal palace of iNkosi Zwelothando, as the seat of the royal family of the cultural community – as the leading family of the community – was also erected.
“The preservation and strengthening of the unique cultural identity and heritage of the AmaBhele KaJamangile as a cultural community is very important to us as the Jamangile KaMabandla Royal Family. A cultural community that knows where they are from and that is proud of their roots and who they are, can stand firmly on this foundation, look ahead and work to ensure a beautiful future for the upcoming generations. We are proud to have signage in our mother tongue that welcomes our community members and travellers to our kingdom and that also indicates where the seat of the Royal Family, as leading family of the community, is,” says iNkosi Zwelothando Mabandla of the AmaBhele KaJamangile Traditional Community.
“AfriForum works to ensure that Afrikaners, as a cultural community – in peaceful co-existence with other cultural communities – can thrive here at the southern tip of Africa. Peaceful co-existence is possible when cultural communities act in mutual recognition and respect towards one another. A healthy cultural self-image and respect for the own lies the foundation to also be able to respect other communities. It is therefore a privilege for us to do projects like this, that promote cultural identity, in collaboration with iNkosi Zwelothando,” says Nantes Kelder, National Project Coordinator of Intercultural Relations and Cooperation at AfriForum.
This joint project flows from the mutual recognition and cooperation agreement between AfriForum and the Office of iNkosi Zwelothando that was signed in March 2022 that, amongst others, aims to promote collaboration to preserve and promote cultural identity and heritage.
