Hatherley refuse dump in critical state
The AfriForum branch in Pretoria East recently completed a refuse dump site audit at the Hatherley Municipal Refuse Dump that indicates that this site only complies with 24% of the minimum legal requirements.
The audit is compiled by evaluating minimum requirements as set out in the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008). AfriForum processed these requirements into 25 questions, and then used these questions to compile the refuse dump audit.
“It is a disgrace that the refuse dump site is in such a critical state. The Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality will have to intervene to solve the problem. We were shocked to see what the area looks like. People dump refuse illegally and there are people living on the refuse dump site,” says Lambert de Klerk, AfriForum’s Coordinator for Gauteng North.
