Hammanskraal drinking water not suitable for human consumption
AfriForum today sent a letter to the Tshwane Metro regarding the quality of Hammanskraal’s drinking water and requested the Metro to make use of alternative resources to supply clean drinking water to the residents until the problem has been solved.
This follows after AfriForum on 12 November 2019 performed water tests in the Hammanskraal area after media reports regarding the quality of the drinking water. These tests found that the water is not suitable for human consumption.
Water samples were taken at both the Jubilee shopping centre and the Hammanskraal Police Station that were sent to a Sanas accredited laboratory for analysis. These results indicate that the water contains high levels of nitrate that are dangerous for human consumption.
“The results indicate that the water sample that was taken at the Jubilee shopping centre contains 8.8 units of combined nitrate and nitrite, which exceeds the Sanas 241 limit for drinking water,” says Jaco Grobbelaar, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria.
AfriForum encourages Hammanskraal residents to rather use bottled water until the Metro notifies them that the water once again complies with the Sanas 241 regulations for clean drinking water and is safe for human consumption.
“AfriForum will however continuously evaluate the water quality to protect the constitutional rights of Hammanskraal residents and to ensure that they are supplied with clean drinking water. Furthermore AfriForum also urges the Metro to restore the water quality to the required standard again as soon as possible so that residents can have access to clean drinking water,” concludes Grobbelaar.
