Fraud in excess of R85 million in Bethlehem; AfriForum approaches Hawks
This stems amongst others from various investigations that were launched by AfriForum, as well as documents that were handed to the civil rights organisation. The charges include evidence of the payment of irregular invoices which contained amounts that were much more than the services delivered.
“The investigations indicated amongst others that tenders were illegally awarded to contractors – who don’t qualify for it – without following fixed tender processes. Furthermore many payments were made to irregular invoices,” says Isoldé Laesecke, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Bethlehem branch.
“We are hoping that the guilty parties will be punished and justice will prevail. AfriForum will do everything in its power to see to it that taxpayers’ money will be spent in a responsible and regular manner, and that possible criminal activities will be subjected to scrutiny. AfriForum is making a plea to whistle-blowers to come forth and uncover corruption,” says Morné Mostert, AfriForum’s Head of Local Government Affairs.
