East Rand branches clean veld in Germiston to prevent land grabs
AfriForum’s structures in Germiston, Edenvale, Alberton and Kempton Park worked together with the community to protect residents of Klopperpark in Germiston against illegal land grabbing. In the past few weeks, attempts have been made to illegally occupy land, which necessitated an urgent response from the community and security organisations.
The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Service (EMPD), private security companies and AfriForum neighbourhood watches were on the scene to monitor the situation and offer support. However, the field in Planeet Road – where the attempted land grabs took place – was wooded with very long grass, which made the work of the neighbourhood watches and the EMPD difficult, especially at night when visibility is a critical factor.
To solve this challenge, AfriForum branches and the community came together on 22 June to clean and tidy up the field. During the clean-up effort, many trees and bushes were cut, and more than 30 bags of rubbish were removed. This project not only improved the visibility in the field, but also increased the security of the area, ensuring that no illegal land grabbers can enter the field unnoticed.
“The cooperation between the AfriForum branches and the community demonstrates the power of collective action. When we come together, we can protect and improve our communities. This clean-up effort is proof of our commitment to ensure a safe and stable environment,” says Jurie Ferreira, AfriForum’s District Coordinator on the East Rand.
AfriForum thanks everyone who participated in the project and expresses its appreciation for the community’s ongoing support. Collaboration and proactive action like this are essential to successfully tackling the challenges communities face.
