Court order: Sedibeng Water must restore water supply to Free State and North West towns
The civil rights organisation AfriForum today obtained a court order in the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein that asks Sedibeng Water to immediately restore the water to various towns via the Balkfontein Water Plant.
Sedibeng Water must do everything in their power to supply water in a sustainable manner.
“We see this as a huge success as this one water plant has an impact on so many municipalities, it is a victory for us that we can protect these communities’ right to water services in this way,” says Morné Mostert, AfriForum’s manager for local government affairs. “The Department of Co-operative Government must work together to provide basic services as ensured in the Constitution.”
This court order follows the week-long water shortage that prevailed in the Matjhabeng, Nala, and Maquassi Hills Local Municipalities. AfriForum urgently approached the court on 20 October 2021 to address this issue. AfriForum will closely monitor the execution of this court order.
