Collaboration needed now to avert waste management crisis in Tshwane Metro

The civil rights organisation AfriForum has today again called on the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality to work together to find solutions to the challenges regarding waste management. There are currently only four operational landfills under the Tshwane Metro’s management, which poses significant challenges to efficient waste management. None of these landfills passed AfriForum’s landfill audit this year.

AfriForum believes that the waste management challenge in the Tshwane Metro has been exacerbated by the closure of the Onderstepoort landfill in 2019.

Although AfriForum is aware that the development of new landfills is a complicated and often protracted process, the organisation emphasises that immediate interventions and strategic partnerships are essential to avoid a full-scale waste management crisis.

AfriForum has already taken proactive steps to mitigate the situation, such as the management of a recycling separation site, which the organisation intends to expand further. However, the extent of the problem necessitates a collective effort. AfriForum is committed to working with the Tshwane Metro and other stakeholders to develop innovative and sustainable solutions.

In a letter to the city manager of the Tshwane Metro, the organisation highlights these challenges and then also requests various information, amongst others:

  • The Tshwane Metro’s plans for the development of new landfill sites;
  • immediate solutions to remove capacity constraints and;
  • opportunities for collaboration.

“We believe that collaboration is the key to solving the Tshwane Metro’s waste management challenges. AfriForum is ready to enter into discussions with the Tshwane Metro and other stakeholders to ensure a sustainable, efficient system that benefits all residents,” says Lambert de Klerk, AfriForum’s Manager for Environmental Affairs.

AfriForum invites the Tshwane metro to get involved in these issues and welcomes the opportunity to contribute to sustainable waste management solutions.
