Chrissiesmeer neighbourhood watch equipped and ready with new safety equipment

AfriForum’s Chrissiesmeer neighbourhood watch is now – thanks to a valuable donation of six two-way radios – equipped and ready to take the safety of the Chrissiesmeer community even further.

AfriForum’s Ermelo branch donated these six radios as well as a base station to the Chrissiesmeer neighbourhood watch this week. These radios will be used during the neighbourhood watch’s regular patrol shifts so that neighbourhood watch members can communicate with each other more efficiently. During load shedding, the mobile networks in the area are highly unpredictable and members repeatedly find themselves in places where they cannot communicate with the other neighbourhood watch members at all. These two-way radios will therefore help ensure that the neighbourhood watch can tackle their task with even greater success.

In the short time they have been active, the Chrissiesmeer neighbourhood watch has grown from a small group of people with extremely limited resources to a full-fledged neighbourhood watch that now has almost all the necessary equipment. The neighbourhood watch boasts reflective vests, vehicle magnets, patrol lights, flashlights, bulletproof vests and now also two-way radios.

According to Millicent van den Heever, leader of the AfriForum Chrissiesmeer neighbourhood watch, this local neighbourhood watch had already been running for some time before it joined AfriForum’s community network. The lack of equipment used to be a huge challenge for this neighbourhood watch, she explains. “This is precisely why we approached AfriForum. We realised that our neighbourhood watch needs to be made stronger and that this can only happen if neighbourhood watch members have the necessary equipment and receive training. AfriForum made this possible for us,” says Van den Heever.

“We will continue to assist the Chrissiesmeer community as much as possible so that this town can be safer for everyone who lives there or wants to visit it,” says Jaco van der Merwe, chairperson of AfriForum’s Ermelo branch.
