AfriForum’s Upington neighbourhood watch apprehends suspect
AfriForum’s Upington neighbourhood watch apprehended a suspect who was observed in a yard this past weekend.
This incident took place in Groenpunt Avenue. The suspect climbed over a fence and when he wanted to enter the house, a woman noticed him. Her husband pursued the suspect. The suspect fled and was missing for some time but was later arrested in Schroeder Street under guidance of Rassie Hanekom, sector leader of this AfriForum neighbourhood watch branch.
“It is due to quick reaction and cooperation of neighbourhood watch members and the public that the suspect was apprehended,” says Hanekom.
“We appeal to the community of Upington to become involved with the neighbourhood watch to therefore curb crimes such as this,” says Stephan van Tonder, Chairperson for AfriForum’s Upington neighbourhood watch.
“The neighbourhood watch’s radio network is available for the entire Upington area and surrounds. We have also entered into an agreement with AC Security to provide assistance to AfriForum members,” says Gonda Louw, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for the Kalahari.
AfriForum is also in the process of establishing a farm watch system in the surrounding areas.
AfriForum appeals to Upington’s residents to join this neighbourhood watch. SMS “Upington” to 32532 (R1).
