AfriForum’s branch in Springs sends letter of demand to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality
On 9 February, AfriForum’s branch in Springs instructed their legal team to present NERSA (National Energy Regulator of South Africa) and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality with a letter to resolve the ongoing issues regarding electricity supply.
Springs and other towns under the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality experience severe power outages due to poor infrastructure maintenance.
AfriForum’s legal team sent the letter of demand to NERSA as the municipality does not meet the minimum standards, according to their legislative contractual obligations, as stipulated by the license provider’s minimum conditions.
“It is unacceptable that poor infrastructure management and maintenance leaves residents of Springs and large parts of the East Rand in the dark for hours on end due to other factors not related to loadshedding. This puts incredible pressure on the community and businesses. We insist that NERSA hold the municipality accountable to draw up and make available a workable and sustainable plan on how they plan to deal with this poor service delivery and maintenance,” says Jurie Ferreira, District Coordinator for the East Rand.
AfriForum will consider further legal action if NERSA and the municipality do not fulfil their legal obligations.
