AfriForum’s Benoni neighbourhood watch increases visibility before festive season

AfriForum’s Benoni neighbourhood watch participated in the civil rights organisation’s national visibility patrol on 8 November 2019.

13 neighbourhood watch members travelled 634 km over 45 man-hours between 20:00 and 04:00. No serious incidents were reported.

AfriForum launched a national project on 30 October 2019 to increase policing visibility during the coming festive season. It is expected that crime will increase; AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches therefore want to make a difference in their respective communities by reassuring residents through high visibility actions and keeping them safe.

“Visibility plays a crucial role in curbing crime. AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches will therefore emphasise increased visibility in their respective areas,” says Marié Naudé, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.

“Actions like these promote cooperation between the different role-players. Communities should take ownership of their own safety and support the SAPS within the framework of the law to make their areas safer,” says Ettiene de Klerk, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Benoni neighbourhood watch.
