AfriForum requests an action plan for sewage spillage in Richards Bay
AfriForum requests from the uMhlathuse Local Municipality to send this civil rights organisation a written action plan to solve the frequent sewage spillage in Veldenvlei in Richards Bay. This follows after residents in this area have already been struggling for 10 years to get the problem resolved.
In a letter sent to the municipal manager on 23 February, AfriForum also requests that the timetable that demonstrates the municipality’s actions to tackle this problem be provided to them.
“The situation has become unbearable due to the frequent pollution and high levels of E.coli in the water. It not only pollutes the freshwater stream but also the fish life in Lake Mzingazi. Regardless of years of complaints, we now demand a drastic solution to this problem,” said Sias van Schalkwyk, resident of Veldenvlei.
AfriForum gave the uMhlathuse municipality 14 days to propose an action plan. To date, no feedback has been received from the municipality.
“The uMhlathuse Local Municipality is considered to be among the top 10 best municipalities in South Africa and we hope that this problem will be resolved soon. AfriForum will consider criminal charges if our request is not met,” said Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.
The community is encouraged to get involved with the AfriForum branch in Richards Bay in order to make a real difference: SMS “Richards Bay” to 45344 (R1).
