AfriForum demands an action plan from Cogta in KwaZulu-Natal

AfriForum today sent a letter to Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), requesting that a plan of action be made available within 30 days indicating how the municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) will develop pounds. This follows after several municipalities are not compliant with the KwaZulu-Natal Pound Act. 2006 (Act No. 3 of 2006).

The law requires every municipality in KZN to build a pound and have a poundkeeper in charge within 12 months after the law came into effect.

“The fact that municipalities do not have a pound makes it difficult for the authorities to act, especially when it comes to stray cattle that are often linked to livestock theft, seeing as they cannot be kept legally and safely,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.

“We are aware of municipalities that received a national grant to build a pound, however, the money was stolen within six months. We see no political will to comply with the law,” concludes Van Aswegen.

AfriForum’s legal team will consider further steps if the MEC does not comply with this request.
