Pretorians hit with water restrictions, but Metro’s the biggest culprit
The announcement that the Tshwane Metro will impose fines, limit, or disconnect water supply to consumers who do not comply with the level 1 water restrictions is outrageous, according to AfriForum, as this Metro is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to water wastage.
Although it is commendable that the Metro is taking steps to raise awareness regarding the current water shortages and reminding residents that the level 1 water restrictions that were imposed previously are still in force, AfriForum questions why law-abiding citizens who faithfully pay their municipal bills, are being punished while the Metro is one of the leading contributors to the crisis.
The Tshwane Metro, one of the biggest water consumers in Gauteng, pumps 18% more water from Rand Water than the city is authorised to receive. This while 33% of water that is lost in the Metro is largely due to leaks and illegal connections.
“Everyone is aware of the looming water crisis and every resident in the Tshwane Metro must take ownership and use water responsibly. However, the residents cannot be blamed if concrete steps are not taken and plans are not in place to repair all the leaks and identify illegal connections,” says Dewet Ungerer, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Greater Pretoria South.
AfriForum calls on the Tshwane Metro to first pay attention to the unnecessary wastage of clean water before pointing the finger at the law-abiding residents and businesses in the Metro.
“AfriForum will always have the community’s interests at heart and is more than willing to help with workable solutions to stop the unnecessary wastage of water. The civil rights organisation encourages residents to report any water leaks in their communities to AfriForum so that urgent attention can be paid to them,” concludes Ungerer.
