Tzaneen branch rushes to aid fire brigade during devastating fires in Magoebaskloof

The recent fires in Magoebaskloof destroyed hundreds of hectares of plantations and farms, but amid this devastation shines a beacon of hope in the form of AfriForum’s Tzaneen branch and the residents who support this branch. On 12 July, while its neighbourhood watch stepped in and helped contain the fires, the branch made much-needed donations to the local fire department along with the community. Among other things, the branch donated 21 soft drinks, 21 energy bars and two boxes of electrolyte mixtures to the firefighters. In addition, they were also equipped with first aid products such as gauze, bandages and ointment for burns.

“These donations not only address the immediate needs of those who helped fight the fires, but also serve as a powerful example of AfriForum’s unwavering commitment to the community,” says Hendrik Kotze, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for Limpopo.

In addition to these donations, AfriForum’s Tzaneen neighbourhood watch helped put out the fires themselves. They worked tirelessly with local firefighters for three days to contain the fire. The fires started earlier this month in the Magoebaskloof area and quickly spread due to strong winds.

“The significance of the Tzaneen branch’s contribution extends beyond the material support provided. It embodies a spirit of cooperation that is cultivated when a common goal must be achieved. In times of crisis, these displays of unity are of crucial importance to promote resilience and instil hope in a community,” says Shaun Potgieter, AfriForum’s Tzaneen Neighbourhood Watch Leader.

Kotze says the involvement of AfriForum’s Tzaneen branch is also proof of the power of community-driven initiatives. “By actively engaging in firefighting efforts and subsequently providing material assistance to those affected, the branch has set a commendable example for others to follow. Their actions highlight the influential role that local organizations can play in times of crisis.”
