AfriForum presents politically inconvenient facts about land and land reform in presentation before parliament
The civil rights organisation AfriForum today continued its fight against the Expropriation Bill [B 23 – 2020] with an oral presentation before the Select Committee on Transport, Public Service and Administration, Public Works and Infrastructure in the Parliamentary Precinct (National Council of Provinces) in Cape Town. This follows after a further opportunity for public comments was opened regarding this controversial bill.
In March 2023, AfriForum submitted written comments against the Expropriation Bill as well as the Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Infrastructure Development and Property Management. In June 2023, AfriForum representatives also delivered oral presentations opposing the bill at various provincial-level opportunities for comment countrywide.
According to Ernst van Zyl, Head of Public Relations at AfriForum, expropriation without compensation is state sanctioned theft – legalised looting – deeply immoral and a human rights violation. It is an inhumane, ill-conceived policy motivated by a combination of corrupt greed, ideological possession, cynical electioneering and a philosophy of revenge.
“AfriForum is however not an organisation which only opposes destructive policies. A large portion of my presentation today consisted of providing carefully considered, sustainable solutions, as well,” concludes Van Zyl.
