EMPD removes illegal squatters in Primrose after pressure from AfriForum’s Germiston branch

This week, AfriForum’s Germiston branch succeeded in having the illegal squatter structures erected opposite the Primrose Police Station removed with the help of Ekurhuleni’s Metropolitan Police (EMPD). This follows after AfriForum put sustained pressure on the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality for the removal of these illegal structures.

According to Kaye Labuschagne, local government affairs representative of AfriForum’s Germiston branch, the AfriForum neighbourhood watch has noticed an increase in criminal activities in and around this growing settlement in the past few months. In addition, residents of the camp were guilty of illegal dumping. Since there were no sanitary facilities, the camp also posed a health risk.

EMPD Germiston North, led by Inspector J. Dlamini, addressed camp residents on Tuesday (12 September) and requested them to remove their personal property from the site. After this, all illegal structures were demolished and removed with the help of the municipality’s refuse removal services.

“This issue is a major source of concern for the residents of Primrose. That is why AfriForum’s Germiston branch would like to thank Ekurhuleni’s Deputy Chief of Police, Goodman Mzolo, and Chief Superintendent J. Gebhuza for the assistance they offered to the Primrose community in this process,” says Labuschagne.
