Who and what is AfriForum?

AfriForum is an Afrikaans civil rights organisation that protects the rights of minority groups at national as well as provincial level, and anyone who can identify with AfriForum’s principles and objectives may join the organisation. AfriForum’s community plan focuses on mobilising communities to thus take control of their own streets and neighbourhoods again. AfriForum ensures that your constitutional and civil rights are recognised and protected at national level.

West Coast branch in bloom

Last year, AfriForum’s West Coast branch, in collaboration with members of the Longacres Homeowners Association, started an initiative to mark wildflowers in the Longacres Country Estate with a sign indicating the name of and some background information on each flower. These information boards were placed along a hiking trail where visitors to the estate can read them. The branch also put up a sign with information on the branch itself.

This year, this project was expanded with more signs next to flowers. The walking trail is a wonderful opportunity to see the unique plants and flowers in their natural habitat and gain more knowledge about them. The trail is about 2 km long and is easily accessible to any person, young or old.

“We plan to plant more indigenous trees along the route and will welcome individuals and businesses who want to help us with this task. These trees are supplied by nurseries in Wolseley and Grabouw, which aim to plant ten million trees by 2025,” says Sidney Monk, Chairperson of the West Coast branch.

“This year is a particularly good time to come and see the flowers. The West Coast branch invites the public to walk the trail on Sunday, 20 August, from 11:30, when it is the official inauguration of the trail. Charmaine Loubser, Deputy Mayor of the Saldanha Bay Local Municipality, will open the proceedings with a short message,” said Johan Crous, District Coordinator for the West Coast.
