Private Prosecution Unit takes on Limpopo buffalo breeder’s stock theft case
AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit has completed the first step towards the possibility of initiating a private prosecution on behalf of a buffalo breeder who alleges he is the victim of stock theft. Leon Fourie of Lephalale approached the unit after the National Prosecuting Authority declined to pursue his cases.
On Thursday, 22 June, the unit led by its head Adv. Gerrie Nel, visited the Lephalale Police Station in Limpopo where copies of the two dockets were obtained through a Promotion of Access to Information Act application. What followed was a guided tour of Fourie’s farm where he pointed out locations on the border fence where his buffaloes are alleged to have crossed over to a neighbour’s farm.
After visiting several sites on the farm, Nel said: “The tour of the farm and the border fence provided valuable understanding of the circumstances which may have precipitated the alleged offences. With this first-hand knowledge of the environment, our next step is to consider the contents of the dockets and decide whether there is merit in pursuing a private prosecution.”
