North region neighbourhood watches participates in national patrol

On 14 and 15 April AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo took part in AfriForum’s national patrol in cooperation with the South African Police Service (SAPS), community policing forums (CPF), community members and various security companies. The patrol started at 16:00 in the afternoon and continued until 06:00 the next morning. The purpose is to increase visibility in the respective provinces and counter crime.

In total, 799 of AfriForum’s patrollers participated, 24 358 km were covered in 512 vehicles and the neighbourhood watches dealt with 35 incidents.

“I am very proud of the north region neighbourhood watches who are always willing to participate. I also want to thank each patroller for their willingness to sacrifice their time every night to look after the safety of their respective communities. The increased visibility in towns plays an important role in community safety, and that’s why patrols like this are important,” says Sampie Steinberg, acting Safety Specialist for the north region and AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Greater Pretoria North area.
