Who and what is AfriForum?

AfriForum is an Afrikaans civil rights organisation that protects the rights of minority groups at national as well as provincial level, and anyone who can identify with AfriForum’s principles and objectives may join the organisation. AfriForum fights and builds in the Cape Town Metro

Various projects have recently been undertaken in the Cape Town Metro as part of AfriForum’s Fight and Build week to clean and improve the area for its residents. Amongst other things maintenance work was done at the Castle of Good Hope and about 40 trees were planted during this week.

AfriForum’s Helderbergkom branch kicked off the week on 16 October with a cleaning project in the green belt next to the Summervale Retirement Village in Gordons Bay. The belt stretches from Lemoenboom Street to Dennehof Street and was cleaned in collaboration with Xolf Consulting Services.

On 19 October the branch surprised Securerite Security in Somerset West with lunch and the neighbourhood watch members in the Helderbergkom received safety training in legal aspects.

On 20 October the branch spoilt the elderly at the Ons Plek Community Centre with sweet packets, hand massages and blankets in cooperation with Solidarity Helping Hand and Helderberg School of Beauty.

On 21 October AfriForum’s Cape Town North branch performed maintenance work at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town’s city centre. Herbicide was sprayed against the walls, weed and young trees were removed from the outside walls and garbage was removed from the canal.

“The maintenance work at the Castle of Good Hope is the start of an exciting sustainable project to ensure that we preserve a part of our heritage for our descendents,” says Johardt van Heerden, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Boland.

On 22 October the Cape Town North branch cleaned the Uitspan Pospark in Durbanville by picking up and removing garbage. The branch then sprayed the island in Jip de Jager Drive with herbicide.

The branch concluded the Fight and Build week on 23 October on a positive note by planting 35 pork bushes (spekbome) and 5 yellowwood trees together with former Binnelanders actress, Pascal Pienaar, and assisted in painting the front of Oom Vossie Voortrekker Hall in Bellville.

“These projects were made possible by volunteers and branch members that approached everything with a positive attitude. They take ownership and responsibility for their community and environment and this contributed to the success of these actions,” concludes Van Heerden.
