AfriForum’s Roodepoort neighbourhood watch forms part of SAPS success

The AfriForum neighbourhood watch in Roodepoort on 27 August formed part of a success spearheaded by the police when a suspect was arrested for the possession of presumably stolen power cables.

Neighbourhood watch members received information that a white bakkie presumably transporting stolen property was spotted in the area. The crime intelligence network contacted the police, after which neighbourhood watch members assisted the Roodepoort SAPS by following up the information. The vehicle was finally located in Chamdor close to Kagiso.

The 46-year-old driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and the stolen property was later identified as cables from Eskom’s electrical network worth approximately R70 000. The police confiscated the cables. The suspect is being detained at the Kagiso Police Station and further investigation led to a company in Florida. The case is being investigated further.

“Cooperation between the police and community structures is busy reaping rewards and is of vital importance in the combating of crime. The police expressed its satisfaction with the manner in which the information was quickly followed up, as well as the cooperation between the SAPS and community structures,” says Fanie Naudé, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Roodepoort branch.
